Asian Wrestling Championships is the Wrestling Asian Championship organized by the Asian Associated Wrestling Committee (AAWC). The men's tournament began in 1979 and The women's tournament was first staged in 1996, and it has been held every year.
Meanwhile, the 2017 edition of the prestigious continental event is scheduled to kick off on May 10 in the Indian capital of New Delhi and will run through May 14.
Accordingly, Iran’s hopes in the freestyle category are pinned on Reza Atri (57kg), Behnam Ehsanpour (61kg), Meysam Nasiri (65kg), Hamed Rashidi (70kg), Bahman Teimouri (74kg), Alireza Karimi (86kg), Hossein Shahbazi (97kg) and Yadollah Mohebbi (125kg).
Iranian freestylers will be led by Mohammad Talaei as the head coach as well as Ali Bayat as supervisor.
For the Greco-Roman division, Iran’s squad will comprise Saman Abdevali (59kg), Ali Arsalan (66kg), Afshin Biabangard (71kg), Pejman Peshtam (75kg), Ramin Taheri (80kg), Hossein Noori (85kg), Seyed Mostafa Salehizadeh (98kg) in addition to Behnam Mahdizadeh (130kg).
Ali Ashkani will accompany Persian Greco-Roman wrestlers as the head coach with Mohaamad Delirian as the supervisor.
Iran has been title-holder in both freestyle and Greco-Roman sections for the past two editions of the tournament which were hosted by Qatar and Thailand. Iranians also rank first in the all-time medal table with a total of 344 medals including 175 gold, 75 silver and 94 bronze. In team category also Iran stand on top the table with a total of 34 titles.
